A fabulous pair of George III shield-back or ‘escutcheon’ pattern chairs, attributed to Gillows. C.1780
With refined and elegant proportions, caned seats intact above tapering forelegs. Fine hand painted details expressing flower bells and tulips.
This design of a five-splat shield back chair with a ‘camel back stay rail’ is referenced in Susan E. Stuarts, Gillows of Lancaster and London, Volume 1, page 165.
